Title: Political Leaders Call for Aid to Palestine to Be Stopped Following Hamas Attack
In the wake of the recent Hamas attack, the liberal parties in Sweden have been the first to demand a halt to aid to Palestine. Leading politicians from various parties have expressed their concerns over supporting an authority that glorifies murder and engages in terrorist acts.
Johan Pehrson, on his way into SVT’s party leader debate, voiced his disapproval, stating, “We cannot support an authority that glorifies murder, that glorifies terrorist acts.” Pehrson’s sentiment was echoed by Ebba Busch, the party leader for the Christian Democrats, who added, “I believe that it is obvious that we immediately need to freeze aid to Palestine.”
SD’s Jimmie Åkesson further criticized Sweden’s monetary support to organizations involved in violence and terrorism, calling it unreasonable and unwarranted. These sentiments were also supported by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who revealed that the government is already reviewing aid to Palestine.
“The government is reviewing aid to Palestine. If there is the smallest penny that goes to something that is even close to terrorist activity, it must be cut off immediately,” stated Kristersson. Aid Minister Johan Forssell also expressed his firm stance, saying that every kroner of Swedish development aid to Palestine should be “destroyed.”
In a surprising turn, the liberals have also suggested that Sweden should sell weapons directly to Israel in order to combat crime and terrorism. Kristersson emphasized the urgency of taking measures to ensure the end of such violence.
However, not all party leaders are in favor of withdrawing aid. The Social Democrats, led by Magdalena Andersson, do not view aid suspension as a solution at the present moment. Center leader Muharrem Demirok, while critical of the Palestinian government’s response to the attacks, called for a thorough review if evidence suggests that funds are reaching Hamas.
Reports of celebrations in Sweden following the Hamas attack have further fueled the debate. Leaders from various parties universally condemned these celebrations, branding them abhorrent and grotesque. The Green Party’s Märta Stenevi stressed the importance of distinguishing between Hamas and the Palestinian population, emphasizing the need to continue aid to the Palestinian civilians who are also suffering.
Left-wing leader Nooshi Dadgostar rejected the idea of withdrawing aid, emphasizing that it supports essential necessities like food and water and helps in developing a democracy away from Hamas’ rule of terror.
