Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Benghazi, Fares Fathi, explained that “Libya is ranked 20th in the world, with the most polluted countries in the air, according to the global platform for air quality (AirVisual Platform).”

Fathi continued to the Libyan Al-Anbaa newspaper: “This classification is considered a dangerous indicator, due to the Libyan state’s lack of interest in vegetation, which is considered a very important factor for purifying the air from atmospheric pollutants and gases that are harmful to the climate, human health, and animal resources.”

He pointed out that “one of the most prominent reasons affecting air pollution is also the lack of interest in sustainable development. From a health perspective, it may have an impact on the general population.”

He stated, “By monitoring the air quality in the city of Benghazi and the oases, using stations for monitoring outdoor air quality, after installing outdoor air quality monitoring stations from the company “IQAir,” it was found that the air quality during the year 2023 in Libya is (34.3 mg/m3) “It is unhealthy.”

It is noteworthy that five stations were installed to monitor outdoor air quality in February of last year 2023, by a Swiss company that is the largest in the world in terms of stations for measuring air quality and climate change. They were delivered to the Libya Center for Research and Climate Change, and were installed in separate places according to the population density of each. Region, as well as according to human activities, and the first two stations that were installed in the eastern region were in the cities of Benghazi and Al-Bayda, and the two stations that were installed in the western region were in Tripoli and Zliten, and the fifth station was installed in the oasis region.
