Libya participates in Arab meeting to discuss disaster risk reduction

The Ministry of Local Government, Government of National Unity, representing the State of Libya, participated in the Arab meeting to discuss disaster risk reduction, which was held in Egypt and attended by representatives from Arab countries.

The Director General of Environmental Sanitation Affairs, Ibrahim bin Dakhil, participated in the meeting, representing the Ministry of Local Government. During the meeting, the most important developments related to the Arab Coordination Mechanism for Disaster Risk Reduction were discussed.

During the meeting, “the efforts made in the previous meeting held in the Kingdom of Morocco were evaluated, and the challenges facing the implementation of strategic plans for disaster reduction, such as lack of resources, were highlighted.”

The participants also stressed “the importance of cooperation between Arab countries and unifying efforts to confront these challenges, and proposing the establishment of national committees in each country to supervise disaster reduction programmes, and develop effective mechanisms for prevention and preparedness to confront future disasters.”

In his speech, Director General of Environmental Sanitation Affairs Ibrahim Bin Dakhil stressed that “the sixth meeting of the Arab Strategic Coordination Mechanism to Reduce Pollution Risks constitutes a continuation of the efforts made at the fifth meeting held in Rabat in June 2023, which provided a valuable opportunity to review and evaluate the efforts made so far.”

Bin Dakhil added, “There are real challenges facing the implementation of the strategy, especially with regard to the technical and administrative resources needed to complete the executive plan for the period 2023-2025, stressing that achieving the goals of this strategy requires unifying efforts and consolidating visions and plans.”

The Director General of Environmental Sanitation Affairs called on all member states to “work and contribute effectively to the ongoing discussions at the sixth meeting to ensure reaching a consensus that serves common interests. He also stressed the importance of working to create an integrated mechanism within a national ministerial committee in each Arab country to supervise national programs to reduce disaster risks, which include monitoring and early warning programs, preparedness and readiness, and prevention methods, in addition to resilience mechanisms to reduce loss of life and property.”

Bin Dakhil praised “the great role played by the Technical Secretariat of the Arab Coordination Mechanism, and the efforts made by all participating parties to achieve security and safety for their people and reduce disaster risks, stressing that continuous cooperation and continued diligent work will remain the key to achieving a safe and sustainable future. He also expressed his optimism that joint work and continuous cooperation will be a fundamental pillar for achieving the goals of this strategy, and developing an effective framework for reducing disaster risks in the region.”

The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, the Head of the Delegation of the Kingdom of Bahrain – Head of the Fifth Meeting, the Head of the Delegation of the Kingdom of Bahrain – Head of the Fifth Meeting, the Head of the United Nations Arab Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, and delegations of member states.
