Libya participates in Arab meeting to reduce risks

The Ministry of Local Government, representing the Government of National Unity, participated over the past two days in the second meeting of ministers concerned with disaster risk reduction affairs held in Cairo. The Ministry was represented by the Director General of the General Administration of Environmental Sanitation Affairs, Ibrahim bin Dakhil, upon assignment from the Minister of Local Government, Badr al-Din al-Tumi.

Director General of the General Administration of Sanitation Affairs, Ibrahim bin Dakhil, stressed “the need for Arab efforts to unite and exchange expertise and studies related to natural disasters, in accordance with the goals of sustainable development and adaptation and mitigation programs. He also stressed the importance of establishing a national body that manages and develops a comprehensive strategy to reduce disaster risks.”

He pointed out that “the State of Libya will do its utmost to provide support to our brothers in Palestine to enhance their capabilities to reduce the risks of disasters, especially as a result of the Zionist occupation, stressing the position of the Government of National Unity and the Libyan people in supporting the Palestinian people in the face of the injustice and attacks they are being subjected to by the Zionist occupation.”

He expressed his “thanks to the Chairman of the meeting, the representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain, for his efforts, and he also commended the efforts of the General Secretariat, the Technical Secretariat of the League of Arab States, the focal points and the participating legal experts from all Arab countries to prepare the draft statute for the disaster risk reduction strategy and its working mechanism.”

He stated that “through bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting, he will coordinate with some international organizations and delegations to open areas of cooperation and exchange of expertise in combating pollution, adaptation programs, mitigation of climate change, and disaster risk reduction programs through early prediction mechanisms, preparedness, resilience, and recovery, pointing out that he is communicating with delegations of countries that have experience in disaster reduction strategies, such as Morocco and Algeria, for joint cooperation and to benefit from their previous experience in the mechanism for dealing with disasters and containing crises.”
