First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Fawzi Al-Nuwairi and Head of the House of Representatives Diwan Abdullah Al-Masry Al-Fadhil participated in the parliamentary forum organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union under the slogan “Parliaments and Pluralism: Opportunities Available through the Charter for the Future” which was held on the sidelines of the Future Summit in New York City.

The forum witnessed “a number of speeches that focused on the effectiveness of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the Future Summit in New York, where the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Dr. Tullia Axson, welcomed the strong recognition of the role of parliaments in the United Nations, which came in Action 57 of the Charter, adding that the Charter for the Future provides a clear path to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and to reform the multilateral system.”

“There are key objectives for the IPU to work with the UN,” said IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong.

He explained that “the Inter-Parliamentary Union has developed many tools and mastered many of the processes that concern us at the United Nations.”

He pointed out that “the real challenge at this stage is not in inventing new tools and processes as much as it is in improving the use of those that already exist.”

It is worth noting that “the forum focused on the role of parliaments in the United Nations, assessing the progress made so far and evaluating the opportunities available for deeper parliamentary engagement with the United Nations in the future, and will provide a first parliamentary response to the Charter for the Future.”
