Libya participated during the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is currently taking place at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Muhammad Abu Sneina, from the Permanent Mission of Libya to the United Nations, delivered a speech before the Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs, during the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In the statement delivered by Muhammad Abu Sneina, Libya stressed “the importance of social development and enhancing the role of the family in society.” It also “renewed its commitment to social development goals and called for bridging the digital gap and achieving justice for the Palestinians in their occupied territories.”

According to the statement published by the Permanent Mission of Libya to the United Nations, and presented within the framework of the general discussion of the social development item, “Libya affirmed its commitment to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable groups through social welfare policies, providing comprehensive health care, free education for all, and striving to achieve food security.” The statement also emphasized the pivotal role of the family in society, and called for strengthening its position and protecting it from the challenges of the times.

The statement addressed “the importance of equitable access to digital services,” noting that “Libya has developed a solid infrastructure at an affordable cost for individuals within its national communications and informatics strategy (2023-2027), making it top the ICT Development Index for the year 2024 in Africa, according to the Union’s latest report.” International Telecommunications (ITU)”.

The statement called for “bridging the digital gap between countries to achieve sustainable social development, and taking into account the negative effects posed by these technologies, such as the spread of misinformation, hate speech, racism, and threats to digital security, in order to combat them.”

Regarding the situation in Palestine, “the statement strongly denounced the Zionist entity’s continuation of its war of extermination against civilians in Gaza, and the occupation’s expansion of its war to include Lebanon as well.”

The statement called for “rapid action to end this suffering and support a just and lasting solution that respects the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.”

He pointed out that “this war is another witness to the occupation’s policies and its deliberate harm to civilians, by targeting their residential communities and destroying service, health and educational centres, which discredits the international community’s efforts to achieve social development goals.”
