Interview between Time.news Editor and Foreign Affairs Expert
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome to Time.news! Today, we’re diving into a significant event on the global stage: the third Turkish-African Ministerial Conference, currently ongoing in Djibouti. Joining us is Dr. Helena Misbah, a renowned expert in international relations with a focus on African and Middle Eastern diplomacy. Thank you for being here, Dr. Misbah!
Dr. Helena Misbah (HM): Thank you for having me! I’m excited to discuss this important conference and its implications for both Turkey and Africa.
TNE: Let’s start with the context. Minister Al-Tahir Al-Baour from the Libyan Government of National Unity has arrived in Djibouti to participate. Why is this ministerial conference significant for Africa and Turkey?
HM: This conference is a vital platform for enhancing cooperation and understanding between Turkey and African nations. Turkey has been actively pursuing stronger ties with African countries in recent years through economic, political, and social initiatives. The fact that Libya, a pivotal player in North Africa and a member of the African Union, is represented at such a level shows the importance of these discussions.
TNE: Minister Al-Baour highlighted the importance of the Turkish-African partnership in his speech. What key areas of cooperation do you think are being discussed at this conference?
HM: Absolutely, partnerships are critical! There are several key areas likely being discussed: trade, investment, infrastructure development, and even cultural exchanges. Turkey has made substantial investments in African infrastructure projects, and the continent is a burgeoning market; hence, both sides stand to gain significantly from enhanced bilateral relations. Additionally, there’s scope for collaboration in sectors such as education and technology, which can empower local populations.
TNE: That’s intriguing! Given the current geopolitical climate, what challenges do you think might arise from this partnership?
HM: One major challenge is the varying political landscapes within African nations. Each country has its own unique needs and priorities that Turkey must navigate carefully. Additionally, as Turkey continues to assert itself as a regional power, there are concerns about its influence and how it might affect existing relationships Africa has with other global powers, particularly in terms of economic dependencies.
TNE: Interesting points, Dr. Misbah. How can both sides ensure that this partnership is beneficial and equitable?
HM: Transparency and dialogue are crucial. There should be open discussions about mutual interests and concerns. Additionally, involving local stakeholders and communities in the decision-making process can ensure that partnerships are sustainable and address the real needs of the populations. Turkey must also be mindful of criticisms regarding neocolonial tendencies to build trust with African nations.
TNE: Great insights! As we look ahead, what outcomes or developments should we anticipate from this conference?
HM: I anticipate we’ll see a commitment to increased trade agreements and perhaps some concrete projects outlined for collaboration. We might also witness a strategic framework being established to foster ongoing dialogue beyond this conference. I believe it’s a step towards a more structured partnership that could yield significant benefits for both continents.
TNE: Thank you, Dr. Helena Misbah, for your valuable perspectives on this crucial event. It’s clear that the Turkish-African partnership is not only relevant but also essential for future development on both sides.
HM: Thank you for having me! I look forward to seeing the outcomes of this conference and the ongoing evolution of Turkey’s role in Africa.
TNE: We appreciate your insights, and we’ll keep our audience updated on any developments.
