Libya surpasses Tunisia in number of migrants heading to Italy

The Italian Nova Agency said that Libya ranked first in the number of migrants heading to Italy since the beginning of the year until July 5.

The agency added in a report that approximately 14,755 illegal immigrants arrived on Italian shores from Libya during the first half of the year.

The agency indicated that the number of immigrants recorded a decrease of 47% compared to the same period last year on an annual basis.

Tunisia ranked second in the number of immigrants, with 10,247 illegal immigrants, a rate of 71% on an annual basis as well.

Nova reported that most of the departures from the Libyan coast were from the western region, while only 583 migrants arrived from the eastern region alone.

Regarding the nationalities of the migrants, the Nova report said that more than 5,000 people from Bangladesh and more than 3,000 Syrians left Libya during the same period, in addition to other nationalities including Egypt, Pakistan, Mali and Gambia.

The number of arrivals to Italy decreased by more than 60%, according to the agency, with a total of 25,692 migrants arriving by sea compared to last year, which recorded more than 67,000 arrivals.
