Not a trivial choice. If when designating the number, and therefore the logo, of the department to be attached to the license plate of their vehicle, some logically choose that of their place of residence, others also sometimes decide to let their hearts speak. And to show others, when they travel, their department of origin or for which they have a particular affection.

And in this game, according to the platform ranking eplaque.fr published this Thursday, in 2023, the two Corsican departments (2A and 2B) are the favorites of the French. Followed, behind the Isle of Beauty, Savoie (73), Ariège (9) and Haute-Savoie (74), in fifth position. At the bottom of this list, we find the Loire (42), the Aisne (2), and the Seine-Saint-Denis (93), which therefore bring up the rear.

The head of Maure, “a guarantee of serenity in the collective unconscious”

According to Benoit Ginet, the president of eplaque.fr, there are three reasons which explain this appetite for Corsica when registering his new vehicle: “Firstly, the very strong attachment of Corsicans to their region, regardless where they reside in the territory. Placing Maure’s head on the plate of his car would also be a guarantee of serenity in the collective unconscious. Finally, as they approach the crossing of the Mediterranean, motorists would prefer to display the Corsican emblem to avoid being perceived as tourists.”

This list is produced on the basis of 50,000 requests for plates made in 2023, because since 2009, it has been possible to choose, but only when purchasing a new vehicle, the department number which must appear there. Eplaque.fr thus takes into account the number of requests in relation to the population density of the departments concerned, otherwise, the most populated departments in the country would find themselves in the lead each time.
