Before the last, tenth stage, the 18-year-old Latvians lost 31 points to the leading Belgian crew of Marvin Vanluschen and Glenn Jansen and kept their hopes of becoming champions.
Saturday’s qualifying race was moved to Sunday and Lielbarži were second in Group B, behind only Dutchmen Kuhn Hermans and Ben van den Bogart. The Latvians won the first round of the race, the French brothers Kilian and Evan Prunier were second, and the crew of Vanluchen was third after receiving a penalty from their rivals, thus securing the championship title for the Belgian.
In the second race, the Lielbarži crew finished in sixth position, but Hermans won. In the stage, Hermans had 43 points, while brothers Lielbarži and Prunier had 40 points each.
At the end of the championships, Vanlušen won 422 points, Lielbrāži – 401 points, and Prunier was third with 379 points.
In this year’s championship, the five fastest crews in each qualifying group earn additional points in the season overall.
Last year, playing their first full-fledged season in the world championship, Daniel and Bruno Lielbarži took fifth place in the overall standings, while the Belgian Marvin Vanluchen with the “canter” Nicolas Mousset from France became the champions.
