Preobrazhenka, a small village in southeastern Ukraine, may appear serene and idyllic from afar with its abundant fields and lovingly tended yards. However, the devastating war has left its mark on this seemingly tranquil community.
Tamara, a resident of Preobrazhenka, shared the unsettling reality of daily life amidst the conflict. She revealed that the village experiences silent nights interrupted only by distant sounds of shelling. Determined to secure their sustenance, the villagers work tirelessly during the day to plant as many vegetables as possible, uncertain about what the impending winter may bring.
The onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion last year forced Tamara and her three granddaughters to seek refuge in their home’s cellar. However, the damp and cold conditions soon made it unlivable. Despite the challenges, most villagers decided to stay, opting for the familiarity and security of their homes, gardens, and personal crops.
Sadly, Preobrazhenka has not been spared from the brutality of the war. Recently, three individuals from the village suffered critical injuries due to shelling, according to local authorities.
Amidst the somber atmosphere, Tamara’s granddaughters provide a glimmer of hope. Engaged in the garden and playing with their beloved dog, Javeline, they remain aware of the sacrifices made by their fellow villagers. The village has already mourned the loss of two soldiers who perished in combat, and they anticipate attending another funeral.
Yurii, a resident of Preobrazhenka, whose son serves on the front lines, showcased the fragility of emotions once he began discussing his family’s circumstances. The realities faced by the Serenkov family served as a stark reminder that misfortune knows no bounds.
The third funeral procession that recently took place in Preobrazhenka saw the village crowded from early morning. Mourners lined the main street, clutching flowers and flags, paying their respects to Ruslan Serenkov, a 37-year-old machine gunner who lost his life on June 5 while on a combat mission near Bakhmut.
Nadiia Serenkova, Ruslan’s 34-year-old widow, now faces the daunting task of raising their two young children, Sophia, 8, and Illia, 12. Grief-stricken, she finds it impossible to fathom a life without her husband.
Tragedy has not been a stranger to the Serenkov family. Forced to flee Belarus after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, when radioactivity contaminated their city of Homel, Ruslan’s parents, Asiia and Petro, found solace and a fresh start in Preobrazhenka.
Throughout his military service, Ruslan expressed his deep connection to the army. In one poignant conversation with his mother shortly before his death, he shared, “Mom, you can’t imagine how many good people are there. I should have gone to the army much earlier.”
The story of Preobrazhenka reflects the resilience and courage displayed by Ukrainians living in conflict-ridden regions. While the war continues to take its toll, the community’s determination and unwavering spirit serve as a testament to the human capacity for hope in the face of adversity.
