After the end of the corona pandemic, life expectancy will increase again. Average life expectancy at birth in Germany in 2023 is 83.3 years for women and 78.6 years for men. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden.
Therefore, life expectancy has increased by around 0.4 years for both sexes compared to the previous year. During the Corona years 2020 to 2022, life expectancy fell by 0.6 years for men and women compared to 2019. “The level from 2019 has not been reached again – but there is a clear catching effect,” the Center Federal said.
It is important to know: “Life expectancy at birth” sums up mortality at all ages in one value. This is independent of the age structure and size of the population. Therefore, life expectancy is better for comparisons than time, as accountants explain.
Despite the name, it is not a prediction for babies today. According to predictions, boys born in 2023 can – depending on the cultural difference – live around 81 to 90 years and girls around 85 to 93 years.

But things are currently looking a little different in North Rhine-Westphalia: There, the average life expectancy of newborns has dropped slightly for the second time in a row. For girls it is 82 years and five months, and boys live to an average of 77 years and eleven months, as announced by the state statistics office IT.NRW in Düsseldorf.
Compared to the last estimate, life expectancy for girls has fallen by around three months and for boys by two months. The figures are based on estimates for the years 2021 to 2023.
Life expectancy is subject to some changes, a spokesman said. The order did not give other reasons for the reduction. The highest values in the statistics of the past 20 years are in the years 2018 to 2020. For new girls, life expectancy at that time is an average of 82 years and ten months, and for boys it is 78 years and four months. .
Pandemic-related differences between East and West are able to equalize again. As of early 2022, life expectancy in the east has increased again after sharp declines in 2020 and 2021, while it is also decreasing in the west. In 2023, life expectancy rose again in both East and West, with the East seeing stronger increases.
Women in both parts of the country live almost the same length of time again. Men in the West, on the other hand, live an average of 1.4 years longer than those in the East. In 2021, this difference grows to 2.3 years.
