Standings: from Thursday, July 25 to Saturday, July 27, the date 3 of the Clausura Tournament of the Liga 1 2024 will take place. Four clubs with six points are leading the second short competition of the season: Melgar, Alianza Lima, ADT and Los Chankas. Universitario de Deportes tops the accumulated standings.
The team of Guillermo Farré had no trouble overwhelming ‘papa’. They scored five goals at the Alberto Gallardo Stadium. Fernando Pacheco, Santiago González, Martín Cauteruccio, Irven Ávila and Gianfranco Chávez scored to put Cristal second in the table.
Alianza Lima started winning the classic match with an own goal from Andy Polo after a cross from Sebastián Rodríguez; however, Universitario came back in the match in seven minutes. First at 81′, José Rivera headed in to score the equalizer. Then, at 88′, Jairo Concha, with a surprising free kick, placed the definitive 2-1 to unleash madness in the Monumental Stadium of Ate.
Melgar lost to Alianza Atlético and suffered their first setback in their goal of achieving the Clausura. Additionally, the defeat ended a successful run of 15 matches unbeaten with nine consecutive victories in their previous appearances, including a promising start with thrashings of Cusco FC (2-0) and César Vallejo (5-2).
The ‘rojinegro’, led by DT Marco Valencia, wasted the opportunity to consolidate their lead and remain at the top of the accumulated standings, where they are currently second on goal difference, but could be surpassed depending on the result of the classic match and the remaining duel of the day from Sporting Cristal. Meanwhile, the team from Sullana ended an eight-match winless streak thanks to goals from Adrián Fernández, Jesús Mendieta, and Renato Espinoza. The ‘churres’ temporarily moved out of the relegation zone by accumulating 18 points.
César Vallejo returned to the path of victory by overcoming UTC in Trujillo. The ‘poets’ recovered from the thrashing against Melgar and managed to win with a goal from Pierre Da Sila and another own goal from Jonathan Segura. The orange team achieved their first triumph in the Clausura and closed in on the Conmebol spots. The ‘gavilán del norte’ maintained their irregularity and has only managed to secure three out of nine points in their recent matches, remaining at risk of relegation.
With goals from Luis Ramos, Iván Colan, and Juan Manuel Tévez, the club Cusco FC also celebrated their only victory so far in the second championship of 2024. They defeated Sport Huancayo and will remain in the upper part of the accumulated table followed by Cienciano and Los Chankas. Meanwhile, the ‘red killer’, fell back and could not break away from their negative result trend: only one victory in the last seven matches of Liga 1.
