Blithely taking advantage of Real’s defensive generosity, Atlético emerged victorious this Sunday in the Madrid derby (3-1), thanks to a double from Alvaro Morata and a goal from Antoine Griezmann, its French spearhead. Leaders before this 6th day of La Liga, the Merengues must, with this defeat, abandon the head of the ranking to FC Barcelona. Now 3rd with 15 points, they are however still ahead of their evening tormentors (5th, 10 points), who have found some color.
Real’s difficulties were visible from the first moments of the match, played in a Metropolitano which was just waiting to ignite. Morata gave him a good reason to do so, opening the scoring in the 4th minute, victoriously heading in a cross from Samuel Lino. Enough to expose Madrid’s defensive generosity, which Griezmann did not hesitate to exploit in turn, a few minutes later.
Boulevards on the wings
On a great collective sequence from the Colchoneros, the Frenchman, alone at the penalty spot, rose high enough to place a nice cross header, unstoppable for Thibaut Courtois (2-0, 18th). Underwater, the Merengues still sounded the revolt at the end of the first period, reducing the gap on a clear half-volley from Toni Kroos, from outside the area (2-1, 35th). Emerging like a fox from the surfaces, on a David Alaba post, Eduardo Camavinga even thought of equalizing (44th), but saw his goal refused for offside at the start of the action.
The efforts of Carlo Ancelotti’s men to come back to the score were, however, reduced to nothing upon returning from the locker room. Once again overwhelmed on the wings, they could only watch, helpless, as Saul’s long cross landed on the skull of Morata, completely forgotten six meters away (3-1, 46th). Despite another header from Mario Hermoso, this one on the post (54th), the score then did not move, Real contenting itself with sterile possession under the “Olé” of the opposing public. The absence of Vinicius, due to gastroenteritis according to some Spanish media, was clearly felt.
