Lightning Beat Maple Leafs: Kucherov Reaches 700 Assists, Point Returns | NHL Recap

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Lightning continued their impressive run, defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Wednesday night for their sixth consecutive victory. The win, fueled by a dominant performance from Nikita Kucherov and a welcomed return from an injured Brayden Point, halted Toronto’s five-game winning streak against Tampa Bay. The Lightning are now 20-1-1 in their last 22 games, establishing themselves as a formidable force as the NHL season progresses. This latest victory for the Lightning comes after a break for the Milan Cortina Olympic Games, and highlights their resilience even in the absence of head coach Jon Cooper.

Kucherov was the story of the night, scoring his ninth 30-goal season and adding two assists for a total of 701 in his career. He reached the milestone at 2:59 of the third period with a one-timer from the right circle, assisted by Gage Goncalves, extending the Lightning’s lead to 3-0. The Russian-born forward also reached 700 NHL assists in 855 games, becoming the second-fastest player born outside of North America to achieve the feat, trailing only Peter Stastny, who reached the mark in 784 games. Peter Stastny’s record remains the benchmark for players born outside of North America.

Point Returns with a Bang

Adding to the Lightning’s offensive firepower was the return of Brayden Point, who had been sidelined for the past 11 games with a lower-body injury and also missed participation with Team Canada at the Olympics. Point scored twice, including the goal that made it 4-1 with just 11 seconds remaining after Toronto had pulled their goalie. Assistant coach Rob Zettler praised Point’s eagerness to return, stating, “He was skating like that all week, it looked like he was chomping at the bit to get back in the game.” Zettler added, “Obviously he was crushed he couldn’t help Canada over the last couple of weeks, but it was great to have him back. He’s a difference maker for us, for sure.”

Maple Leafs Struggle to Overcome Lightning’s Momentum

Despite a strong showing from goaltender Anthony Stolarz, who made 32 saves, the Maple Leafs couldn’t contain the Lightning’s relentless attack. John Tavares and Matthew Knies scored for Toronto, but their efforts proved insufficient. Tavares scored a power-play goal at 16:19 of the third period, narrowing the gap to 3-1, but Point quickly responded, restoring the Lightning’s three-goal advantage. Knies added a late goal at 17:13, but the game was already out of reach. Auston Matthews also contributed with an assist, tying Tim Horton for 10th on the Maple Leafs’ all-time franchise list with 349 assists.

Cooper’s Absence Felt, But Lightning Respond

The Lightning played without head coach Jon Cooper, who is mourning the death of his father, Robert. Zettler and assistant coach Jeff Halpern are splitting coaching duties during Cooper’s absence, and will continue to do so for Thursday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Despite the emotional circumstances, the team delivered a strong performance, demonstrating their ability to adapt and overcome adversity. “They were really good tonight,” said an unnamed source, as reported by the Associated Press, referring to Kucherov, Point, and Goncalves. “They were awesome to watch.”

Looking Ahead

The Lightning will look to continue their winning streak on Thursday night when they travel to Carolina to face the Hurricanes. The Maple Leafs, meanwhile, will attempt to rebound from this defeat as they visit the Florida Panthers on the same night. Toronto captain John Tavares acknowledged the urgency facing his team, stating, “I think we know that, especially after a night like tonight, we have to be better. There’s obviously only so many games left. All we can control is one game at a time, but urgency is high.”

With Kucherov now tied with Steven Stamkos for the most 30-goal seasons in Lightning history, and Point’s successful return to the lineup, Tampa Bay appears well-positioned for a strong finish to the regular season. William Nylander had two assists for the Maple Leafs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lightning’s offensive onslaught. The Lightning’s current form suggests they will be a challenging opponent for any team in the playoffs.
