Tampa bay Lightning star Brayden Point is expected to be sidelined week-to-week with an undisclosed injury, casting doubt on his availability for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina.the injury occured during a 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, potentially impacting both the Lightning’s playoff push and Canada’s Olympic aspirations.

Point exited the game after scoring a power-play goal at 4:29 of the second period, extending tampa Bay’s led to 3-0. The incident occurred when Flyers defenseman Cam York fell onto Point’s right leg, forcing him to be assisted off the ice.

“This is definitely more than day to day, probably classified as week to week right now,” a team spokesperson stated on Tuesday, prior to the Lightning’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.”Hopefully, we averted what could have been really, really bad. But he’s going to be out for the time being now, and it’s unfortunate because he was a big part of our team’s success of late.”

The forward has registered 30 points – 11 goals and 19 assists – in 37 games this season. He was among the first six players named to Canada’s preliminary roster for the Olympics in June and contributed a goal and an assist in four games at the 4 Nations Face-off last season.

Lightning face Mounting Injury Concerns

Point’s injury adds to a growing list of absences for the Lightning. The team is currently without defensemen Ryan McDonagh (lower body), Victor Hedman (elbow), and Emil Lilleberg (undisclosed).

“The big thing is, you see these situations and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, is his season going to be over?’ And it’s nothing remotely close to that,” the team spokesperson added. “But the big thing for us is how do we continue to keep playing? We’ve had a lot of hurdles in the injury department, and this is another one. But the group has been used to this.”

Despite the injuries, the Lightning (28-13-3) have won 10 consecutive games and currently hold second place in the Atlantic Division, trailing the Detroit red Wings by a single point. Thay have 10 games scheduled before the NHL Olympic break begins on February 6.

Pro tip – Tampa Bay’s 10-game win streak is their longest of the season and demonstrates their ability to overcome adversity, even with key players injured.

A Proven Playoff Performer

Drafted by Tampa Bay in the third round (No. 79) of the 2014 NHL Draft, Point has amassed 665 points (317 goals, 348 assists) in 694 regular-season games. He has also proven to be a dominant force in the playoffs, recording 89 points (44 goals, 45 assists) in 92 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Point led the playoffs in goals in both 2020 and 2021, scoring 14 in each postseason to help the Lightning secure back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.

“Brayden Point’s a big player for us, a really important player,” the team spokesperson acknowledged. “But everybody’s got their roles. It’s just about moving guys around a little bit. Nobody’s going to completely replace him, but there are guys on our team itching for more minutes, and this is their prospect.”
