Ligue 1 has a new leader and it would have been difficult to predict at the start of the season. However, Stade Brestois did not steal its place: this Saturday, it largely dominated Olympique Lyonnais, even if it stumbled for a long time against Anthony Lopes, and won a logical victory (1-0) to point in top of the ranking after six days of the championship. For his part, Fabio Grosso, who was making his debut on the OL bench, was able to see the scale of the challenge that awaited him in the Rhône.

OL preserved by Lopes and the amounts

In line with their good start to the season, the Brestois started the match very well, multiplying the opportunities against the overwhelmed Lyonnais. Throughout the first period, Anthony Lopes was regularly called upon and had the difficult task of keeping his team afloat, almost alone. Despite their efforts, OL were not far from cracking in the face of the attacks of Jérémy Le Douaron, who notably found the bar (24th), before Romain Del Castillo, in the continuity of the action, came close to the post. Halftime result: 13 shots to one and a miraculous draw.

To turn things around, Grosso then chose to change everything at the break, bringing in three offensive players. The difference was felt a little, the Gones obtaining a few timid situations, including two long shots from Alexandre Lacazette (56th, 74th). But the domination still remained very largely Breton, Lopes intervening once again on a cross shot from Pierre Lees-Melou (57th).

Winning return for Mounié

Lyon’s salvation was ultimately down to Brest’s clumsiness. Yet two notches above, dominating without much effort in the middle, Éric Roy’s men were not always inspired in the zone of truth and dropped a little in intensity at the end of the match. But the Finsterians ended up settling the sights in the final moments: having just entered the game, Steve Mounié first hit the post with a first header, before deceiving Lopes with a second, placed flush with the right post (1 -0.87th). The Brest striker could even have doubled the lead (89th), without a superb save from the Lyon goalkeeper.

No matter: the main thing is there for Brest. Thanks to Monaco’s defeat against Nice on Friday (0-1), the Pirates are guaranteed to end the day in Ligue 1 alone in the lead and sign the best start to the year in their history. For Lyon, on the other hand, the situation is terrible. Les Gones have still not won a single match, nor even led in the score for the slightest moment since the start of the championship. Currently in 16th place, they could even become bottom on Sunday evening, in the event of unfavorable results from their opponents.
