As part of the “Hot Jazz” series, which is being held for the 20th year at Beit Abba Khushi, the first show of nine shows this year will take place on Tuesday night, November 12. In each show, artists from abroad are guests, sometimes in combination with jazz artists Israelis The show, titled “20s in New Orleans,” will feature the Christian Winter Quartet, who will host Sarah Vaughan contest winner Koyana Linell of New Orleans.

The 1920s in the southern American city are characterized by small entertainment and dance clubs. The singers joined small groups of musicians and performed with them in a repertoire that included musical arrangements of work songs, gospel songs, religious songs and hymns, and of course blues-based songs. All of these will be played by the Christian Winter Quartet, known for its high instrumental ability, together with Lynel, who has enormous vocal ability.

Linell grew up in a small town in West Texas and connected to all types of music – this was her way of connecting to the world. Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard said that the first thought that occurred to him when he listened to her for the first time was that she was a serious vocal discovery: “Who are you? Where have you been? And why am I only hearing you now? I realized that this is someone who wants to break the rules.” He continued to believe in her and even invited her to sing at last year’s International Jazz Day show with Rebbe Hancock.

Lynelle’s vocal skill allows her to perform an unlimited repertoire, and she approaches jazz with a classical background and education but also with an upbringing as a gospel choir girl that instilled in her the blues and soul. She is a graduate of the Department of Music of the University of Louisiana and often collaborates with various artists such as Nicholas Peyton, Patti Austin, Ledisi, Hancock and John Batiste. Her career is successful and she has already managed to perform in the most prestigious halls and clubs in the world, including Lincoln Center, Dizzy Coca Cola, Marian’s Jazz Room and Carnegie Hall, at the Playboy Jazz Festival and more.

Lynelle teaches at Loyola University in New Orleans. Her debut album “A Little Love” received rave reviews and pushed her on an international tour, including in Australia. In Haifa, she will perform with the saxophonist and clarinet player Christian Winter, born in Denmark and living in New Orleans since 1997. Eden Ladin on the piano, Yonatan Levy on the bass and Brian Richburg Jr. on the drums.

Beit Abba Khushi, November 12, 9:00 p.m. Tickets by phone number 03-5733001.
