Damariscotta, Maine, december 21, 2024 – A cinematic journey from the enchanting land of Oz to the gritty streets of 1930s New york City awaits moviegoers at the Lincoln Theater this holiday season, with screenings beginning December 26. The theater’s diverse lineup offers something for everyone,from a beloved musical reimagining to a classic screwball comedy.

A Tale of Two Witches and One American Dream

The Lincoln Theater presents a mix of fantasy and classic cinema thru January.

  • “Wicked: For Good” brings the popular musical to the big screen,playing December 26-31 and January 1.
  • The Classic Film Club features Frank Capra’s “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town” on January 1 and 2, with a post-screening Q&A.
  • Upcoming films include “Nuremberg” (January 2), “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (January 4), “Sentimental Value” (January 9), and a Met Opera in HD broadcast (January 10).

The visually stunning “Wicked: For Good” (PG; 2 hours,18 minutes) stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba,the misunderstood “Wicked Witch of the west,” and explores her fight for the freedom of Oz’s silenced Animals while attempting to expose the Wizard’s secrets. Alongside her is Glinda, portrayed as the glamorous symbol of goodness, played by Glinda, living in the Emerald City. The film will play at 2 and 7 p.m.on Friday, Dec. 26; Saturday, Dec. 27; and Wednesday,Dec. 31, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28 and Thursday, Jan. 1. the presentation is done in partnership with Colby and Gale.

What makes a hero, and at what cost does goodness come? “Wicked: For Good” delves into the complex relationship between elphaba and Glinda, questioning perceptions of good and evil and suggesting that true change requires empathy and understanding.

Shifting gears, the lincoln Theater’s Classic Film Club presents “Mr. deeds Goes to Town” (1936; 1 hour, 55 minutes) as its third installment. Gary Cooper stars as Longfellow Deeds, a Vermont simpleton who inherits a fortune and finds himself thrust into the spotlight of New York City. The film follows Deeds as he navigates the complexities of wealth and media scrutiny, and the affections of reporter Babe Bennett, played by Jean Arthur. This Oscar-nominated Best Picture, which won Frank Capra a best Director Oscar, will be shown Thursday, jan. 1 at 7 p.m. and Friday, Jan.2 at 2 p.m. Film Historian Jeannie MacDonald will introduce the film and host a post-screening Q&A. Drum & drum Real Estate generously sponsors the Classic Film Club.

The Lincoln Theater offers Wednesday matinee screenings with Open Captions, ensuring accessibility for all viewers.

Looking ahead, the Lincoln Theater’s schedule includes “Nuremberg” on January 2, offered free of charge, followed by a screening of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (1971) on January 4. “Sentimental Value” is scheduled for January 9, and The Met Live in HD: “I Puritani” (Bellini) with a pre-opera talk will be presented on January 10.

Tickets are available in advance at www.LincolnTheater.org. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door 30 minutes before showtime. Adult tickets are $10, while LT members and youth 18 and under pay $7. Special event ticket prices may vary. The lincoln Theater is located at 2 Theater St. in downtown Damariscotta.
