The French have taken control of the winners of the Annecy Animation Film Festival, the largest event in the world dedicated to the genre. If the Public Prize went to the Franco-Belgian “Sirocco and the Kingdom of Air Currents”, presented at the opening, the Crystal for the feature film, the most important award, was awarded to the film which had most enthusiastically festival-goers, “Linda wants Chicken! “, signed by a Franco-Italian duo, which should be released in theaters on October 18, and also won the Gan Foundation Prize for broadcasting.

Apart from the competition, the festival revealed other marvels: here are the five nuggets that dazzled us or that look very promising…

“Linda wants chicken!” »

After a first selection in the parallel section of Acid à Cannes In May, this French film with a tiny budget, signed by the duo Chiara Malta – Sébastien Laudenbach, had the honors of the competition in Annecy for a triumphal screening on Friday… “Linda wants chicken! “, Crowned with the Crystal of the feature film this Saturday evening, even crushed the competition. His history ? In the midst of a national general strike, Linda’s mother, who has unjustly punished her daughter, tries to make up for it by finding a chicken, to prepare it with peppers.

His favorite dish, the one his father cooked for him before he died suddenly. But the search for the bird will take an epic turn, before mobilizing the entire city where Linda lives… Emotional and social fantasy which manages, in 1h13, to tackle a multitude of themes such as mother-daughter relationships, the loss of a loved one , community life, love, regrets or in animal condition (yes, yes…), this little bomb manages to move people and make them laugh a lot. Above all, it marks the retina with its very penciled and always moving animation, multiplying bold graphics and beautiful ideas from start to finish. Breathtaking.

« Ninja Turtles Teenage Years »

Rarely has a major studio film moved festival-goers and animation students in Annecy so much. It must be said that “Ninja Turtles Teenage Years”, presented in an unfinished version on Monday evening, breaks all the codes of the genre. Returning to the origins of the Ninja Turtles, the feature film tells how they were poisoned as children by a chemical that gave them superpowers, before being collected and trained by a lone rat master of martial arts.

Developed in a raw line, close to graphic novels, which takes up the style of New York graffiti of the 1980s and 90s, carried by a soundtrack of rap groups of the time, this production surprises with its crazy energy, its humor , its punk side and paradoxically very moving aspects. A shock, to be discovered on August 9… Mind-blowing.

“Adam changes slowly”

A teenager with a complex because of a body that is too big and tends to adopt funny positions depending on his moods, Adam, 15, is the laughingstock of his high school. As the holidays approach, his father finds him two summer jobs that don’t seem very difficult: guarding a huge villa in the absence of its owners, and mowing a neighbor’s lawn.

But everything will go wrong, which will rush the kid into complex situations… Anti-“teen movie” with rather trashy graphics, this portrait of a disturbed teenager makes you smile by deliberately taking the systematic opposite of all the prevailing principles to American films of the genre. And so, beyond the humor, this Quebec film, which is due out in the spring of 2024, captivates by focusing on those, pariahs, unloved and left behind from high school, to whom the cinema lends ordinary little attention. Amazing.

“Once upon a time there was a studio”

ANNECY FESTIVAL/L. Gutternoire

We do not know how this short film will be visible in the cinema – probably in the pre-program of a future Disney film – but this tribute of less than fifteen minutes capsized the whole festival this Friday. Mixing real images and animation, “Once upon a time a studio”, produced to celebrate 100 years of Disney, involves 500 heroes ― even the villains are part of it ― of the studio evolving in its main building once its doors are closed in order to to achieve a family photo.

From Mickey to Pocahontas, from Goofy to Cinderella, from Aladdin to the Lion King, they all parade, without forgetting two sequences to howl with laughter from the sloth in “Zootopia”. The whole Disney story is there, in a few minutes, and whether you are 9 or 99 years old, there is bound to be a character who evokes memories and brings you to tears. As funny as it is moving.

“The Trolls 3”

Only thirty minutes of the new installment of the “Trolls” saga have been shown in preview in Annecy, but this has largely given hope that this film, which will be released on October 18, will find the level of the first opus, after a half-hearted second. “The Trolls 3” plays with flashback sequences going back to the origins of the hero, Branch, when he was the youngest of a boy band formed with his brothers and called “Brozone”.

To howl with laughter, these concert scenes anchored in the aesthetics of the 1990s, mixed with the graphic line of the Trolls, break the house both musically and visually. The rest of the film seems to match, since Branch and Poppy will try to reform the original boy band… Hilarious.
