Lion DX Brings ‘Revolutionary Test’ for Sepsis to Italy – Health & Wellness

by times news cr

(ANSA) – MILAN, SEPTEMBER 18 – LionDx, an Italian company engaged in molecular diagnostics based in Pordenone, has signed an agreement with the Australian Microbio to develop a test to detect pathogens that cause sepsis. This is – explains the Friulian company – a “unique and revolutionary test, as it is highly sensitive and also suitable for small pediatric patients”. The test is able to identify 26 different pathogens from less than 0.5 milliliters of blood, a quantity equal to about a tenth of a teaspoon, which makes the sample “non-invasive” and “suitable for both children and immunosuppressed patients”.
The collaboration between the two companies will make available to Italian hospitals “advanced diagnostic tools, capable of drastically improving the chances of survival of patients affected by sepsis, responding more quickly and effectively to one of the greatest challenges of modern medicine”.
Every year, sepsis kills 11 million people worldwide, and in Italy alone there are about 20 deaths per day. But it’s not just adults: newborns, especially premature babies, and children under 5 are among the groups most vulnerable to sepsis. According to various estimates, about 40% of sepsis cases worldwide involve children under 5, with a mortality rate that varies between 5% and 20%, depending on the severity and timeliness of the diagnosis.
Sepsis is an inflammatory response of the body to an infection that can lead to organ failure and can be fatal if not treated quickly. Hence the importance of early diagnosis and prompt, targeted treatment, which can increase the chances of survival.
