Tambaram’s Lion Safari Resumes at Vandalur Zoo

Tambaram, – After being closed during the Corona period, the much-awaited Lion Safari at the Vandalur Zoo has finally resumed. Visitors were thrilled as they embarked on an adventurous journey through the forest, witnessing the majestic lions up close. The Vandalur Arinjar Anna Zoo holds the distinction of being the largest zoo in Asia, spanning an impressive 1,500 acres and housing over 2,400 animals from eight different species, including mammals, reptiles, birds, and herbivores.

The Lion Safari was a popular attraction at the zoo, allowing visitors to experience the thrill of encountering lions in their natural habitat within the dense jungle. Escorted vehicles transported the visitors to the Lion Safari location, and they were awestruck by the lions that came close to them. On the way back, they also enjoyed a deer safari. The Lion Safari has always drawn a separate crowd of enthusiasts seeking a taste of adventure.

During the intense first and second waves of the Corona pandemic, the Lion Safari, along with other attractions at the park, had to be closed. However, as the park reopened, there was a growing demand from visitors to revive the Lion Safari. Local newspapers continuously highlighted this demand, leading the authorities to take action. Consequently, extensive efforts were made over the past few months to refurbish and reopen the Lion Safari, covering an area of 147 acres.

The long-awaited moment arrived yesterday when Tamil Nadu Forest Minister, Mathiventhan, inaugurated the reopened Lion Safari on the auspicious occasion of Forest Life Week. Park staff guided visitors in comfortable ‘AC’ vehicles equipped with 28 seats, showcasing not only the deer enclosure but also the seven lion enclosures. The awe-inspiring experience left the audience delighted and thrilled.

In addition to the Lion Safari, Minister Mathiventhan also inaugurated a new surgery center at the zoo’s wildlife hospital. The event was broadcast live, with the minister virtually inaugurating the new rest homes constructed for visitors at the Tiger Reserve in Mudumalai. The inauguration marked an important step towards providing better facilities and care for both the animals in the zoo and the visitors.

However, amidst the celebrations, a group of contract workers employed at the park seized the opportunity to submit a petition to the minister, requesting steps to be taken for their jobs to be made permanent. Their plea remains to be addressed by the concerned authorities.

The Vandalur Zoo is not just a place of amusement but also serves as a center for wildlife conservation. To tackle the conservation challenges faced by wild animals, a high-level wildlife conservation institute has been established in Vandalur. As part of this effort, a two-storied hostel was unveiled yesterday, costing 7.65 crore rupees. The hostel is equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, providing accommodation for researchers, forest officers, and students who visit the institute for certificate studies.

The reopening of the Lion Safari at Vandalur Zoo has brought joy and excitement to both animal enthusiasts and regular visitors. As the park continues to prioritize conservation efforts and upgrade its facilities, it is sure to remain a significant attraction for people from all walks of life.
