Among the most important are the Official Mexican Health Standards (NOM) and now a strong controversy was generated because several were cancelled.

In this sense, one of the constants within Medicine is updating. First of all, health professionals must keep abreast of the innovations that are generated within their area. At the same time, the scientific evidence is modified based on the new discoveries made.

What are NOMs?

Before moving forward it is necessary to know a basic concept. The NOMs are technical regulations of obligatory observance issued by the competent agencies. Their purpose is to establish the characteristics that processes or services must meet when they may constitute a risk to the safety of people or harm human health.

The NOM on Prevention and Health Promotion, once approved by the National Advisory Committee for Standardization of Disease Prevention and Control (CCNNPCE), are issued and published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) and, as it deals with health matters, they enter into force the day after their publication.

The NOM must be reviewed every five years from its entry into force. The CCNNPCE must analyze and, where appropriate, carry out a study of each NOM when its period expires in the course of the immediately preceding year and, as a conclusion of said review and/or study, it may decide to modify, cancel or ratify them.

A serious setback for health?

All of the above serves as a context to talk about a topic that was exposed by the federal deputy Éctor Jaime. Through a publication on social networks, he announced that the Standardization Committee of the Ministry of Health (SSa)chaired by Hugo López-Gatell, decided to cancel several NOMs.
