SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Canadian company Lithium Ionic and the government of Minas Gerais signed a memorandum of intent for the company to extract lithium in the Jequitinhonha Valley region, with forecast investments of 750 million reais, according to a statement from the Minas Gerais government on Friday.

MG LIT, the Lithium Ionic company that signed the protocol, will operate in the extraction of lithium in the municipalities of Araçuaí, Itinga and Salinas, part of the region named by the government of Minas Gerais as Vale do Litio, according to the statement, with the expectation of generating more than a thousand direct jobs in the Jequitinhonha Valley.

Lithium is used in the manufacture of batteries for portable electronic equipment.

MG LIT should start operating in 2025, according to the government, which did not give details about the company’s investment schedule, just saying that the contributions have already started and by the end of the year they should reach 160 million reais.

Lithium Ionic said on its website, on Wednesday, that it had signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with state agencies in Minas Gerais, which would give priority to the company’s projects in the region, “facilitating the support and acceleration of approvals and licenses during the development process”.
