Lithuania has asked the European Commission (EC) to allocate funds to strengthen its border with Russia, which is also the external border of the European Union. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“Strengthening the 275 km long border with Russia is our priority. Most of the infrastructure for monitoring the border needs to be modernized. The costs for this will amount to €16 million,” the statement quotes the head of the department, Agne Bilotaite, as saying.
Vilnius expects to receive €13.7 million from the EC. The cost of upgrading border control systems for the period up to 2030 has also been calculated. It will amount to €65 million. “We count on further assistance from the European Commission in resolving this important issue,” Bilotaite noted.
In 2023, the EU allocated €9.3 million to Lithuania. This was invested in upgrading control systems along the entire length of Lithuania’s border with Belarus, which is also an external border of the EU.
