80 deputies voted for such amendments to the Law on State and Official Secrets in the third and final reading.
Minister of Defense Laurīns Kasčūns stated that the purpose of the amendments is to limit the travel of persons with state secret clearance to countries or territories where their presence may harm Lithuania’s national security.
The law provides that the government will determine which countries are prohibited from traveling without permission based on national security risks.
The Ministry of Defense has expressed the opinion that the ban should apply to Russia, Belarus and China – countries that are already subject to travel restrictions for military personnel and officials.
The Ministry estimates that this ban would affect approximately 56,000 individuals who have the right to work with confidential information.
Those who violate this prohibition will lose the right to work with confidential information.
In certain cases, such as in the case of the death of a close relative, travel to these countries will be permitted with permission or after notification of intent to leave.
