The German Angelique Kerber, former world No. 1 just returned from maternity, was defeated 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 by the power of the American Danielle Collins (62nd). Like Naomi Osaka, beaten at the start by Caroline Garcia the day before, Kerber, 35, made her return to the Grand Slam in Melbourne after giving birth to a child.
