Watch the President’s morning press conference live Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) from the National Palace.

  • This Friday, President López Obrador will discuss the contamination of the Sonora River at a press conference, which is why the heads of the Interior and Environment and Natural Resources ministries are present.
  • The Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), María Luisa Albores, recalled that the contamination of the Sonora River, which occurred on August 6, 2014, is considered the worst environmental disaster in the history of metal mining in Mexico.
  • In that disaster, 40 thousand m3 of acidulated copper sulphate was spilled by the Buenavista del Cobre complex, due to which Grupo México signed an agreement with Profepa to remedy, repair and compensate for the environmental damage, but that was with the sole intention of lifting the closure and reopening.
  • According to Albores, the agreement provided for an amount of 2 billion pesos to address the emergency, but only 1 billion pesos were delivered.
The head of Semarnat explained that 7.8 million pesos were given to those affected; 71.1 million were allocated to Epidemiological and Environmental Surveillance Units; 32.4 million for communication strategy; 185 million pesos for water tanks and 4.7 million for a water treatment plant.
  • Judicial reform, said President López Obrador, must be done in stages and begin with what is being proposed, which is essentially the election of judges and magistrates.
  • The president considered that the powerful are doing everything they can to prevent the implementation of the reform of the Judicial Branch, “they are putting a lot of pressure, saying that there will be economic and political instability. What we want is to have control of the three powers, to establish a dictatorship. No. What we want is to establish an authentic state of law, because what we have is a state of crookedness and bribery.”
