Live in a polluted area? Your mental health is in danger all the details

Long-term exposure, even to relatively low levels of air pollution – can cause depression, anxiety, and negatively affect mental health. Thus, a new study that investigated the links between air quality and mental health proved.

In tracking the prevalence of depression and anxiety in about 400,000 adults in the UK over 11 years, researchers found that those living in areas with higher pollution were more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.

In the journal “American Medical Association Psychiatry”, the researchers, from the universities of Oxford, Beijing and Imperial College London, showed that their findings point to a need for stricter regulations to control air pollution.

The researchers relied on the data of 389,185 participants from the UK Biobank, advocated and rated the air pollution for the areas where they lived. The researchers found 13,131 cases of depression and 15,835 of anxiety among their sample, within a follow-up period of about 11 years.

According to the results of the study, the higher the level of air recognition, the more cases of anxiety and depression, and therefore they concluded that there is a connection between the two. However, not everyone who lives in a polluted area will necessarily experience damage to their mental health.
