The home team set the tone early on. In the seventh minute, Jeremie Frimpong (23) scored to make it 1-0 for the “Werkself”. Bayer continued to dominate, after 35 minutes everything was actually over: Amine Adli (23) and Florian Wirtz (20) had put Leverkusen 3-0 ahead.
The Bundesliga leaders remained confident in the second half, but things got even more bitter for the guests: Fortuna defender Matthias Zimmermann (31) had his hand on the ball during a Bayer cross, which referee Christian Dingert showed after looking at the VAR images to the point.
Florian Wirtz completed his brace and scored to make it 4-0 – the first penalty of his professional career. Düsseldorf was finally defeated, Leverkusen left no stone unturned and can continue to win three more titles this season.
