During the heavy thunderstorms that hit the Bologna area in the afternoon, lightning struck the roof of a building in the hamlet of Ca Vecchia, starting a fire. Meanwhile, thunderstorms in the region continue to spread westward, reaching Modena and Reggio Emilia.
UPDATE 3.35 PM. STORMY INSTABILITY IN THE LOMBARDY ALPS. After the thunderstorms that affected the north-western sector this morning, in the afternoon new thunderstorms took shape in the Alpine areas, in particular in the Orobie Alps, with phenomena that towards the west reach as far as Lecco.
UPDATE 3.20 PM. THE REGIONS OF THE LOWER TYRRHENIAN SEA ALSO HIT BY STORMS. The inland areas of Campania and Calabria, as well as Basilicata, are experiencing scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which are very intense in Calabria, where they are recorded as reaching the coastal areas. Rainfall accumulations of over 25mm are reported in the Catanzaro area.
UPDATE 3.10 PM. WIDESPREAD STORMS ACTIVITY IN CENTRAL ITALY. Many areas of central Italy are struggling with showers and thunderstorms, especially the inland areas of Tuscany and Lazio and Umbria, where some hailstorms have also been reported. Showers and thunderstorms also in the inland areas of the lower Marche and on parts of Abruzzo, with rainfall accumulations that in the Ascoli area have exceeded 40mm.
INTENSE STORMS IN SICILY. Sicily is no exception, with the inland areas struggling with thunderstorms of strong intensity and hailstorms that are especially affecting the central-eastern inland areas. Hail was also reported in Modica, in the Ragusa area, with hailstones measuring 2cm in diameter.
UPDATE 3 PM. HEAVY STORMS WITH HAIL IN EMILIA ROMAGNA. During the afternoon, strong thunderstorms developed in Emilia with hailstorms in Bologna that is hitting especially the northern districts of the city. Thunderstorms also on the Romagna Apennines in the Forlì area.
UPDATE 12.20 PM. NEW STORMS FORMING. Since the late morning hours new showers and thunderstorms are taking shape here and there in part of Italy. In particular we report thunderstorm outbreaks in Trentino crossing the border to Cadore, in the Center some thunderstorms in the Marche in the Ancona area and in Abruzzo in the Apennine areas. In the South thunderstorms in action on Gargano and Etna, showers and some thunderstorms also in southeastern Sardinia.
SITUATION AT 8:00 AM. Within the vast anticyclonic structure present over central-southern Europe, a channel of north-eastern currents is active, reaching the central Mediterranean and Italy from the Balkans. These are capable of triggering local phenomena of instability, already present in the early morning and since tonight in some areas of the country, although alternating with other areas where good weather prevails.
STORMS ALREADY UNDERWAY IN THE NORTHWEST. Showers and thunderstorms are affecting parts of the Northwest, especially central Liguria in the Genoa area, where up to 20mm of rainfall were collected during the night, although the phenomena are decreasing. In Piedmont, showers and thunderstorms are affecting much of the Turin area and parts of Cuneo, in Lombardy Milanese, Varese and Como.

LOCAL STORMS ALSO IN THE CENTRAL-SOUTH. Other phenomena of instability, albeit more isolated, are underway in the internal areas of Abruzzo and are reaching as far as the border with Lazio, other isolated phenomena in Puglia on Salento.
WEATHER FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS. Al Nord phenomena attenuating as the hours pass on the north-western plain and in Liguria, where clearings will appear, instability increasing instead on the Alpine areas with some showers more likely on the upper Piedmont. Elsewhere prevalence of clearings, except for some daytime thickening near the Alps with isolated phenomena between Trentino and Belluno. Al Center scattered clouds and clearings with greater accumulations in the morning on the Abruzzo Apennines, in the afternoon instability clearly intensifying on the internal areas with scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally strong and accompanied by hail on the Lazio hinterland, in the evening at times also on the Tuscan one, but subsequently attenuating. Sud clearings alternating with more consistent cloud cover in the afternoon over the Apennine areas and inland Sicily, with locally strong showers and thunderstorms reaching the peninsular Tyrrhenian coast, but easing by the end of the day.
