The Reds quietly won on the Leicester field on Monday, during the 36th day of “PL”.
Liverpool continued their momentum Monday by chaining a seventh consecutive victory, 3-0 at Leicester, and returned two days from the end to a point of the top-4 of the Premier League, qualifying for the Champions League. Two assists from Mo Salah for two goals from Curtis Jones brought Leicester to their knees in less than four minutes (33rd, 36th). The Egyptian offered a third pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold, from a free kick, for the KO goal (71st).
The Reds, with a phenomenal final sprint, may be salvaging a failed season, as they cannonball back to the top of the English Premier League table. Far behind Manchester City, in a favorable position for the title with 85 pts, and its runner-up Arsenal (81 pts), we find Newcastle and Manchester United, tied at 66 pts but with one game less. Liverpool now have 65, two games remaining.
For Leicester, seven years after their unexpected league title, the last two matches will have a taste of quits or doubles. Jamie Vardy’s teammates have a foot in the lower division, 19th two lengths behind Everton, the last non-relegation.
Salah in all the right moves
The first half hour of the meeting had however been balanced and intense, Leicester starting very strong to try to stifle the men of Jürgen Klopp. But the experience of the Reds allowed them to gradually put their foot on the ball and calm the ardor of their opponents. Then two lightning bolts ripped through the sky at King Power Stadium. Salah, with a long bright cross, first found Curtis Jones in the area for the opener (1-0, 33rd).
Barely the commitment given, the same Salah served Jones a second time, back to goal. The striker turned around and doubled the bet (2-0, 36th). In the next minute, Cody Gakpo had the ball 3-0 down the ball, but Danish Foxes keeper Daniel Iversen avoided the total knockout.
In the second half, Salah and Alexander-Arnold delighted with a subtle free-kick combination. Salah faked the shot and made a slight shift to open his teammate’s shooting angle. Alexander-Arnold’s curled shot went around the wall to go into the skylight (3-0, 71st). Salah nearly completed his masterpiece in the 79th minute. Arrived alone in front of Iversen, he fixed the goalkeeper well, but missed the target.
