Injury Crisis and Senior Absences
The depth of the crisis became evident during an opening pre-season fixture against Sunderland, where Joe Gomez was forced off the pitch in the eighth minute. According to BBC Sport, Gomez is the club’s longest-serving current player but has missed 225 games due to injury since joining from Charlton in 2015. Gomez was subsequently absent from a Sunday training session in Chicago, with a severity update expected this week.
Other senior options are similarly unavailable. Reports indicate that Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an ACL injury and Jeremy Jacquet is nursing a minor issue. While captain Virgil van Dijk remains the club’s only fit senior centre-back, the 35-year-old is currently returning from post-World Cup downtime. Both van Dijk and Gomez are in the final year of their contracts, leading to the possibility that both could depart next summer.
Reliance on Youth Prospects
The lack of senior availability forced Liverpool to rely on teenage defenders for much of the Sunderland match. The pairing consisted of Mor Talla Ndiaye from Senegal and Ifeanyi Ndukwe from Austria, both of whom were signed for a combined £3.5m after being scouted at the U17 World Cup in Qatar last November. However, Ndukwe will not remain at Anfield this season because he does not yet qualify for a UK work permit.
Potential Transfer Targets
To address the void, Liverpool is reportedly considering several Premier League defenders. According to TEAMtalk, the club is giving serious consideration
to an England duo: 32-year-old free agent John Stones and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa. Stones is viewed as an especially attractive option following his release from Manchester City and is believed to be open to discussing a move despite previous ties to Everton.
The recruitment team is also monitoring two other targets, though these deals are deemed unlikely as their current clubs do not intend to sanction exits:

- Micky van de Ven (Tottenham Hotspur, 25)
Management and Organizational Shift
The defensive struggle comes as Andoni Iraola begins his tenure as head coach. Iraola, 44, has emphasized a desire for his team to be “dynamic” and “energetic,” aiming to suffocate the possession
at Anfield. He admitted the challenge of coaching a club of Liverpool’s size and stated that the owners informed him that everything is not perfect.
Iraola’s arrival coincides with instability in the club’s leadership. Michael Edwards, the chief executive of football operations for Fenway Sports Group (FSG), departed recently, and sporting director Richard Hughes is expected to leave in the autumn.
