Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman said that the violence in the name of quota reform movement has caused damage to the livestock department and veterinary hospital in Savar across the country to the tune of Tk 5.5 crore.

He gave this information at a press conference in the conference room of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at the secretariat on Sunday (July 28).

Abdur Rahman said, during the quota movement, Savare upazila livestock department and veterinary hospital suffered a loss of Tk 3 crore 75 lakh. More than crores of rupees have been damaged in Rangpur. A total of 5.5 million rupees has been damaged across the country.

He said that a case has been filed in connection with Savar’s violent attack and looting. The police have so far arrested 14 people. The looted goods have been recovered from four of them. Efforts are on to arrest the rest.

The incident of such a brutal attack is sad and shocking, the Minister of Animal Resources said, we want justice subject to investigation in every case of murder. The Prime Minister also sincerely wants it. This loss is irreparable. Whatever their political identity, they (attackers) are not students. He commented that the police are sure about this.

The minister said that Savar has been vandalized in such a way that it cannot be believed without seeing it. It seems that war has been fought with these establishments. All furniture including TV, fridge, AC in Savar’s livestock office and veterinary hospital were demolished. The day after the incident, when two officers went to the spot, they were also physically tortured.

In response to the question of the reporters whether the political identity of the perpetrators was known or not, the minister said, whatever the political identity, they are not students of any school or college. Police confirmed that they were not identified as regular students of the school college. However, those who have carried out destructive activities by setting fire to BTV Bhawan, Metrorail, Padma Setu toll plaza, Disaster Bhawan, Sethu Bhaban, may have done such an incident.

When asked about the loss of life in the violence, he said any loss of life is irreparable and tragic. So sad. We demand a judicial inquiry into every death. Our Government and Prime Minister sincerely want it.

In response to a question whether the vandalism of mobile veterinary clinic in Savar will disrupt the provision of services, he said, of course, the services will be disrupted. Until it can be turned on, it will be interrupted. But at the moment it is not ready to launch.

When asked whether the amount of damage to the farmers due to the violence has been assessed or not, he said that a committee will be formed in this regard. Action will be taken if that committee reports and assesses it. However, advice has been given to farmers for transportation and marketing of animal products like milk, eggs, fish, meat with permission from the concerned District Commissioner. The ministry will seriously look into the loss of farmers.
