  • Liza Minnelli is writing her memoirs because films and television series “have not lived up to expectations.”
  • She reportedly saw “a film with twisted half-truths.”

Liza Minnelli is working on her memoirs.

In a statement to People on Tuesday, August 6, the Hollywood icon announced that she is writing a book with authors Heidi Evans and Josh Getlin. Liza Minnelli’s memoirs are expected to trace her beginnings as the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, as well as her long career as an actress, singer, and dancer.

“Since I’ve been able to put a pencil to paper, people have been asking me to write books about my career. I told them, ‘Absolutely not! Tell it when I’m not here anymore!’ that was my philosophy,” she stated, before clarifying that a “series of unfortunate events” made her change her mind.

Among the incidents that inspired the star are “a sabotaged Oscar appearance,” “a film with twisted half-truths,” and “a recent mini-series that just failed to do what it should have.”

“All of this was done by people who didn’t know my family and who don’t really know me. Eventually, I was furious. One evening, during dinner, I decided that it was my own story… I’m going to share it with you for all the love you’ve given me,” continued the 78-year-old singer and actress.

Directed by Bruce David Klein, a documentary titled “Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story” was released in June. The artist was also portrayed by Krysta Rodriguez in the 2021 Netflix mini-series about designer Halston.

In her statement, Liza Minnelli revealed that she reached out to a longtime friend, Michael Feinstein, for help corroborating some stories. And she is eager for her devoted fans to read the book.

“Thank you all for loving me so much (and worrying about me). I want you to know that I’m still here, still kicking butt, loving life, and creating. So until this book comes out, know that I’m laughing, that I’m safe in every way, that I’m surrounded by loved ones, and that I can’t wait to see what’s around the corner in life. Kids, wait until you hear that,” warned the future author.

The release of Liza Minnelli’s memoir is scheduled for spring 2026.
