Korean scientists claim to have succeeded in producing a superconductor at room temperature. Such a material perfectly conducts electric current, which opens the way to potentially revolutionary applications.

For ten days, the community of physicists has been in turmoil, after a resounding announcement made on July 22 by South Korean researchers. A team of scientists from Seoul, almost unknown internationally, claim to have discovered nothing less than the Grail of modern physics: a superconducting material at room temperature, called LK-99. This could allow extraordinary applications, such as lossless electricity transmission networks, much faster electronic chips, new ways of storing electricity without losses, or even trains that float above the rails by magnetic levitation! This discovery also opens fascinating perspectives for other fields such as medicine, nuclear fusion, large particle accelerators…
