Lo Kian Yue has become the first Singaporean to win the Badminton World Championship.

In the final on Sunday (December 19) in Vellore, Spain, world number 22 Lo and 14th seed Kitambi Srikanth of India 21-15. Won the set 22-20.

Lowe suffered a broken right knee in the quarterfinals on Friday (December 17).

Low had to go in a wheelchair after the semi-final against Denmark’s Anders Antonsen on Saturday.

Despite a leg injury, Lowe played calmly and courageously in yesterday’s final.

Low, who was trailing 9-3 in the first set, then bounced back.

His game warmed up after a 12-1 draw. Lo won the first set.

In the second set, Srikanth led 18-16 at first.

But Lo stubbornly grabbed the set.

Since the World Badminton World Championships began in 1977, only four countries – China, Indonesia, Denmark and Japan – have won gold in the men’s singles.

Now Singapore is fifth with gold.

President Halimah Yacoub praised on his Facebook page that hard work and perseverance made the Singapore flag fly high.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he was proud of Singapore and looked forward to his subsequent victories.

In the last three months alone, Low has won six of the top ten badminton players in the world.
