Palladam: Due to high electricity bill balance, power weavers are burdened.

Last September, the Electricity Board hiked the electricity tariff. Power loom owners of Tirupur and Coimbatore announced a protest saying ‘they will not pay the electricity bill until it is reduced’.

Recently, Power Minister Senthil Balaji, speaking at a program in Erode, said that an order will be issued soon for 750 units of free electricity and 1,000 units for powerlooms. This has caused joy among the spinners.

Whereas the power looms have not been paid by the power looms for the past four months. Due to the verbal order issued by the government, even though the bill was pending, the electricity board did not proceed. For each of the power looms, thousands of power bills are pending.

According to the power looms, on an average, the electricity bill per power loom is Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000. Six months electricity bill due. Along with this, it is difficult to pay the entire amount as the penalty for non-payment will run into thousands.

Bhupathi, Treasurer of Somanur Powerloom Association said, ‘The outstanding electricity bill can be paid in installments only. We have also requested the government in this regard” he said.
