Posters promoting the first “Loblaws Steal Day” have appeared on the streets of Toronto in recent weeks, a campaign to denounce skyrocketing prices at the company’s stores.

These posters, circulated in Toronto, encourage the theft of products from Loblaws grocery stores and are also shared on social networks, where people express their anger at the Canadian grocery giant.

Some Internet users explained the reasoning behind this move, justifying the theft to fight against overcharging.

“Some people say it’s justified [de voler chez Loblaws] to fight against overcharging,” said FreshdailyToronto on TikTok.

« Galen Weston [le propriétaire de Loblaws] He is a man who has 15,000 times more money than the average person,” added the TikTok content creator using the pseudonym Callum.

“He inherited a chain of grocery stores from his father and stole millions of dollars for price fixing,” he said.

Calling “Loblaws Steal Day” “dangerous and irresponsible,” the company said it was prepared in the event of a disruption.

“We certainly understand that food affordability is an important issue that affects us all, and we will continue to do everything we can, by lowering prices and making significant changes to our business, to help customers save money in our stores,” Loblaws said in a statement to Global News.

The promotion comes as Loblaws faces an upcoming boycott in May, organized online on a Reddit forum called “Loblaws is out of control» (“Louban is out of control”).

The two initiatives are separate, and the boycott organizers clarified i Daily Hive that they do not support Steal Day at Loblaws.

The moves come as, for many, Loblaws has resisted food inflation in Canada, raising its prices and generating more profits, as millions of Canadians struggle to feed their families.

Loblaw Limited owns dozens of supermarket chains and pharmacies in Canada and Quebec.

In Quebec:

Australia:

  • No Frills
  • Fortinos
  • Valu-mart
  • Genuine Canadian store
  • T&T
  • Zehrs
  • The Atlantic Department Store
