Thiruvananthapuram: UDF advances in local by-elections. The UDF won 11 seats in the elections held for 28 local wards. LDF won 15 seats and BJP 2 seats. In the by-elections, the UDF won, while the LDF lost 7 seats. UDF captured six seats from LDF. BJP also won one seat. An independent candidate also won another seat. The BJP won a landslide victory in the 7th ward of Tiruvalla Kallupara. In the by-elections, UDF won the 12th Ward of Kottayam Kataplamattam Panchayat, Meenathucherry Ward of Kollam Corporation, 4th Ward of Trithala Panchayat, 15th Ward of Kozhikode Cheruvannur, Palakkara Ward of Sultan Bathery Municipality and Azhakathukalam Ward of Tirunavaya Panchayat from LDF.
At the same time, the LDF captured the Nilakamuk ward of the Thiruvananthapuram Kadaikkavoor panchayat from the UDF. Bina Rajeev contested as CPM candidate. Bina Raj’s victory is by 132 votes. After Bina Rajeev, who had won as a Congress candidate earlier, resigned due to disagreements within the party, the stage was set for the by-election in Nilakamuk ward. After resigning from the Congress, Bina Rajeev joined the CPM and entered the fray again.

Alappuzha Thanneermukkam seat held by BJP. UDF won all the four seats in Malappuram district. Three wards were retained while one ward was recaptured. UDF retained seat and rule in AR Nagar, Tirunavaya and Karulai panchayats. UDF’s victory in AR Nagar’s Kunnumpuram ward with a record majority. With the win, the UDF also retained the Panchayat administration.
By-elections were held in three seats in Kannur. LDF retained those three seats. Palakkad District Panchayat Alathur Division was retained by the LDF.
By-elections were held in four wards in Kottayam. Out of these, LDF won two seats and UDF won two seats. The LDF candidates won in Idana in Parathod panchayat and Poovakullam in Veliyannur panchayat. UDF won in Viala in Kataplamattam panchayat and Ozhakkanadu in Eruli panchayat. With the victory of the UDF, there is a possibility of a change in governance in Erumeli Panchayat. The UDF has 12 members in the 23-member Panchayat Bharana Samiti. LDF candidate won in Poovakulam ward of Veliyannur panchayat. It is the sitting seat of LDF.
