## Local Officials Fear Budget Cuts and Government Inaction
District officials are concerned about the cost of potential savings, which will be determined at the beginning of the school year. They also express frustration over a lack of dialogue with the shadow government.
“We decided to play the most well-known little song that says that the regions are very wasteful, that they are expensive, that the State gives them a lot of money…,”
deplores Sébastien Martin, president of the Association of elected Intercommunalités de France and president of the agglomeration of Grand Chalon (Saône-et-Loire). Each summer’s end is an opportunity for the government, of Bercy in particular, and the regions to re-enact a stand, which has almost become a republican tradition. On the one hand, the central State wants to balance public finances by reducing budgets, on the other hand, local elected officials are protecting their budget and asking for more resources.
There have been many areas of conflict since Emmanuel Macron came to power. A campaign promise, the President removes the house tax on the first residences even if the government insists on the fact that this removal is a compensation to the nearest Euro.
