Logan Sargeant’s Williams Crash Raises Questions: Is Mick Schumacher the Future Replacement?

Is it happening really fast now?

During the third Formula 1 practice session before the Dutch Grand Prix (Sunday 3 pm; RTL and Sky), Logan Sargeant (23) wrecked his Williams. The American company car caught fire after (another) rookie mistake, lost a wheel and ended up with damage in the high six-figure range.

Sargeant was not injured – but it could still have been an accident with consequences for him. Because those responsible for the traditional British team have finally had enough of the young pilot’s mistakes!

Williams is currently considering his options for a replacement. And that’s where Mick Schumacher (25) comes into play! The German is one of the candidates who could replace Sargeant later this season.

If the leaders of Williams around team leader James Vowles (45) decide to pull the ripcord, then Schumi Jr. would be deployed. In Zandvoort it was only possible with a special license (because he did not complete any of the training sessions in Holland). But: The German could be a serious alternative at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza next week.

Mick has been a test and reserve pilot for Mercedes since 2022 – and so too for Williams, who source the engine for the Silver Arrows. Williams is currently exploring all options for a possible successor. It cannot be ruled out that Sargeant will still be behind the wheel in Monza, but the training accident at Zandvoort cost him a further 20th driving championship.

But: Vowles isn’t considered the German’s biggest fan – and Mick isn’t the only choice! Although Mercedes jewel Kimi Antonelli (17) is not an option and Red Bull is not releasing their young driver Liam Lawson (22), Franco Colapinto (21) is particularly a candidate.

The Argentine is part of the Williams youth program and is currently driving in F2. So far, no one in the paddock believes he can make the jump to Formula 1. Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich (24), who won Formula 2 in 2022, is also a candidate.

Who will ultimately win the race or whether Sargeant will eventually get another chance could be decided this weekend.
