The football club “Lokomotiv” (Sofia) is celebrating its 95th anniversary today.
In May 1929, a group of railway workers from the then railway workshop in Sofia decided to organize their activity, creating the “Railway Sports Club” (Zhsk Sofia).
95 years ago today, an official founding meeting was held, attended by 18 people who are connected in one form or another with the Ministry of Railways.
It was these 18 people who started the team, which became one of the symbols of Bulgarian football.
Over the years, “Loko” has created the names of Nachko Mihailov, Nikola Kotkov, Spiro Debarski and several dozen of the greatest native football players and coaches and has become synonymous with loyalty, honor and “red-black” passion.
The capital “railwaymen” are 4 times champions of Bulgaria (1940, 1945, 1964, 1978), they have 4 cups of the country (1948, 1953, 1982, 1995), they are winners of the Balkan Cup (1973), in addition, they are two times European railwaymen champion (1961, 1963).
In the UEFA Cup tournament, “Loko” reached the 1/4-final in 1980.
On the occasion of the 95th birthday, the management of the club organized a big celebration on Sunday.
At Lokomotiv Stadium in Nadezhda, there will be a show match between a collective team of veterans and the current team.
The mood of the fans will be warmed up with a short musical program, followed by an introduction of the veterans, and the exhibition match will start at 19:29. The entrance, of course, will be free.
Former Lokomotiv football players from different generations will take part in the celebration – from the last championship team in 1977/1978, through the winners of the Cup in 1994/1995 to the record holders in Europe from the beginning of the century and the bronze medalists from 2014/2015. A collective group of great figures such as Yordan Stoykov, Angel Kolev, Stefan Grozdanov and Dimitar Vasev will lead the team.
“We invite all Lokomotiv players to the stadium to celebrate together the anniversary of our beloved club and to respect all those greats who have brought us so much joy over the years and gave their lives to our Lokomotiv,” wrote Nadezhda.
