Tuesday 20 December, at 17, in the Salone dei Marmi of the Municipality of Salerno, the book of Fernando Argentino and Piero Lucia «The Wave. Union struggles in the Salerno area from the second post-war period to the present day», published by Francesco D’Amato Editore. They will discuss the book Alfonso Conteprofessor of Contemporary History at the University of Salerno, Joseph Acocellarector of the Telematic University “Giustino Fortunato”, Michelle Sessasecretary of the Salernitana Society of Homeland History, the lawyer William Scarlato e Augustine Megale, national manager of CGIL Foundations and Research Centers. The mayor will speak Vincent Naplesthe general secretaries of CGIL and CISL Antonio Apadula and Gerardo Ceres and the provincial coordinator of the Uil Patricia Spinelli. The event, also sponsored by the Salernitana Society of Homeland History and by the Memory in Movement Association, will be chaired by the emeritus and academic professor of the Lincei Joseph Hunterauthor of one of the two prefaces to the volume (the other is by Alfonso Conte).


The defeats of the past

The book traces the main turning points in the history of Salerno trade union and democratic movementwith a detailed reference to workers’ struggles and the most important laborers developed from the end of the Second World War to today, highlighting the alternation of advances and defeats of the workers’ movement and investigating the structural reasons. The authors focus on industrialization process of an important southern reality and on the policy of “development poles” which, however, are bitterly consumed in the 80s and 90s. The dismantling of factorieswith the elimination of the widespread productive hinge and of the fundamental democratic garrison constituted by industrial companies, will affect the hopes of creating a more modern and evolved, more just and less unequal society.

The challenge of the future

The bitter resistance struggles in defense of work, many of which lived directly by the authors, however, have also contributed to an important growth of civil conscience of the local community and they constitute a precious experience, which must be recovered from the collective memory so that the workers’ movement can still draw from it today useful teachings to return with authority to the field. In this regard, the book highlights how the effective use of all the resources envisaged by the Next Generation EU, with the implementation of the reforms, which have been culpably postponed and disregarded for too long, both in the immediate a decisive test to face and win the great challenge of unifying the country and finally modernizing the South.
