STORY – The United Kingdom today has nine operational nuclear reactors. But many are nearing the end of their lives.

The objective is set and the path is to be traced. At the start of 2024, London published a “nuclear roadmap”, which sets out its ambitions. By 2050, the United Kingdom intends to have a production capacity of 24 gigawatts (the equivalent power of around fifteen large EPR reactors). A recovery which is at the heart of the country’s energy independence and carbon neutrality strategy for 2050.

Certainly, for twenty years, all the British prime ministers have promised a boost to the atom, without the reality matching the big words. But specific commitments were made. The construction of a new power station – in addition to the Hinkley Point and Sizewell projects – has been approved and the final investment decision should be taken before this year’s legislative elections, which could see Labor return to power.
