From Mallorca to Data Science: One Man’s Journey of Resilience and Reinvention in London

A data scientist who navigated health challenges and a competitive job market has found professional fulfillment and a balanced lifestyle in London, demonstrating the power of adaptability and pursuing one’s dreams.

Sergi García Ballester, originally from Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Mallorca, embarked on a journey to London in 2018 following the completion of his business governance degree in Barcelona. Initially seeking to enhance his English language skills and explore new opportunities, his path has been anything but linear. He began his time in the UK working as a receptionist and waiter at a hotel near windsor Castle, a period he utilized to save money, study, and ultimately discover his passion for the burgeoning field of technology.

Early Setbacks and a Life-Altering Diagnosis

Tho,García Ballester’s initial momentum was interrupted by a significant health setback. Severe back and neck pain forced a return to Mallorca, where he eventually received a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis. “If they’re going to operate, let them operate, but I’m starting my master’s in September,” he resolutely stated, demonstrating a commitment to his future despite the physical challenges. Following treatment and surgery, he commenced his studies in Data Science.

The timing proved difficult.Just as he completed his master’s program, the COVID-19 pandemic erupted, prompting a temporary return to Mallorca – a decision he now considers lucky. When travel restrictions eased, he rejoined a fellow student in relocating to London, only to encounter the realities of a challenging job market. “They were asking for years of experience from people who had just finished their studies,” he recalled. This led to another return home, but an unexpected possibility soon arose: a remote position with a London-based start-up. This proved to be the turning point, allowing him to establish himself permanently in the UK.

Data-Driven Decisions and a Dynamic Career

Currently, García Ballester dedicates his expertise to helping companies make informed decisions based on data analysis. “In short, I help the company make good decisions using data,” he explained. His work involves analyzing conversion rates, initial bookings, geographical distributions, and the impact of process changes – a role he describes as “constantly evolving.” He acknowledges the demanding nature of the sector, noting the inherent risk of potential job displacement.

He believes London is at the forefront of innovation. “There’s no doubt that London is very advanced. you could say that some of the great innovations begin here,” he observed, adding that increased global connectivity ensures these advancements quickly spread to other regions, such as Spain.

Balancing Work and Life in the UK capital

Life in London allows García Ballester to maintain a healthy work-life balance. He starts his day early with a gym visit and typically arrives at the office around 10:00 AM. Afternoons are dedicated to exploring the city, with plans often made spontaneously. “I can decide to take a train and go on a day trip outside of London, or decide to go to a museum, a park, a musical… anything,” he said.

Despite embracing his life in London, a strong connection to his homeland remains. He deeply misses his family, friends, and, above all, the sea. “We are water creatures, and just being near the sea already calms me and gives me peace,” he confessed. He also fondly remembers the food and light of Mallorca, while appreciating the multiculturalism and architectural contrasts of the United Kingdom, as well as the distinct experience of its seasons.

A Future Rooted in the Present

While he envisions a return to Mallorca someday, García Ballester is not rushing the process. He prioritizes enjoying the present moment, having learned that life can change unexpectedly. If asked to summarize this chapter of his life in a single word, he chooses “liberating,” as it has allowed him to achieve his professional aspirations and embrace the world without prejudice.
