Long live cash!

The saying goes that the only battle that is lost is the one that is not given. And I add, at my own risk, that of those that are given, some are lost and others are won. I already know that one of those that are lost in advance is the one related to my right, recognized by the Bank of Spain, to pay with money. Cash, let’s go. I recognize that, for many, it is an idea that may seem

trasnochada.

I was able to verify it for the last time on Monday, when a young couple went into a supermarket to buy a couple of bottles of water with which to quell the heat and they paid the large sum of 1.50 euros! with credit card. I asked the saleswoman and she told me that it was very common. I insisted on the amount, arguing that it seemed very small to me, and she looked at me astonished to tell me that amounts “as astronomical as 50 euro cents” were also paid by card. A little over a year ago I had similar experiences in Australia. There, cash had almost disappeared and there were many stores that clearly stated that they did not accept coins or bills and that you could only pay for ice cream, for example, with a credit card, with bizum or through other electronic applications.

In our country, at the moment, and according to the Bank of Spain, it is a consumer’s right to pay in cash. Despite this, there are companies of various kinds, including rail transport companies such as Iryo, which refuse to pay with money for their services on board the trains, ignoring current regulations. I insist, I know it’s a losing battle, but we consumers are hindering our freedom because of comfort. Payment by card or by any of the other systems makes us less free and puts us in the hands of the Treasury and all those companies to which we provide our data and which then traffic with them.

A lot of talk about data protection regulations, but we are the first to deliver them for nothing or, at most, for a little comfort! That’s why I insist: long live cash!
