On the eight-panel folding screen, ‘壽(su)’ and ‘福(bok)’ are written alternately in various fonts. The densely packed red and blue letters give off a splendid feeling. This is the ‘Baeksu Baekbokdo (百壽百福圖)’, a painting wishing for longevity and good fortune. Baeksu Baekbokdo, which was mainly used in royal ceremonies during the Joseon Dynasty, was also widely used in the 60th birthday parties of ordinary people in the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty.

The special exhibition ‘House Full of Happiness’ at the Bukchon Museum in Jongno-gu, Seoul, which opened on the 24th of last month, showcases works of art created with the hopes that the Joseon people would create happy families. It exhibits around 40 pieces, including Baeksu Baekbokdo, Joseon folk paintings, crafts, and wooden furniture.

You can also see works of art that wish for a hundred years of married life for couples. These include paintings of butterflies by Nam Gye-u (1811-1888), a painter known as “Namnabi” during the Joseon Dynasty, and a two-tiered lantern decorated with butterflies. Also worth seeing are the sculpture of a goose that the groom gave to the bride during a Joseon Dynasty wedding and the wooden peony folding screen symbolizing wealth and honor.

The ‘Munjado (文字圖)’, which depicts Chinese characters such as 忠 (충), 孝 (효), and 信 (신) in pictures, allows us to examine the foundation of the Confucian spirit of the Joseon Dynasty. You can also see inkstones, tables, and pencil cases that reflect the spirit of scholars. The exhibition runs until the 21st.
