The Italian road champion debuted the tricolor victoriously after a day in which Annemiek Van Vleuten once again altered the script, attacking at the last categorized level and extending her advantage over the rest of the pink contenders, to which she clings with more force.
Previously, Veronica Ewers had stirred things up and had a margin over the group of favorites, already affected by a fall – without major consequences – in which even the leader was involved.
It was in Strella (5.5 km at 3.3%) where the Movistar rider changed the pace with the Trek boss, as the only one capable of sticking to her wheel. Once they connected with Ewers, they worked in sync to hold off a fatigued peloton, not quite strong enough to neutralize that quality trio.
In the sprint of three, the logic and explosiveness of Longo Borghini made the difference over the American and Dutch, who could do nothing against the powerful shot of the Trek runner.
In the end, Van Vleuten led the rest of the candidates by 40″ and is more solid in the lead, where her biggest threat right now is today’s winner. Tomorrow the battle will continue with the 105.6 kilometers between Salassa and Ceres that include three points-scoring climbs along the way.
