by time news

The tenth edition of your favorite science magazine is now available in stores or online. With on the cover: small nuclear reactor closer than ever.

Small, modular nuclear reactors are said to be more efficient, safer and cheaper than traditional large nuclear powerhouses. However, in practice there are still a lot of obstacles to overcome. Will the mini-plant remain music of the future or is there hope? You read it – of course – in KIJK.

Also in this issue:

  • Fertilizer is needed to keep crop yield as high as possible, but the gray granules are far from green. That is why various companies are working on ways to make them more sustainable.
  • For years, viruses were thought to be solitary creatures that spread without the help of their peers. However, this turns out not to be true: viruses even sacrifice themselves for each other.
  • In the queue at the roller coaster or while giving a presentation, we break out in a sweat. Researcher Jasper de Groot tries to fathom the smell of fear that we then give off.
  • To better understand the cosmos, astronomers are doing computer simulations that mimic the 14 billion-year evolution of our vast universe.
  • The intensive hunting of sharks takes its toll. A third of the species are in danger of extinction. And that also has consequences for the rest of life in the sea.
